I noticed when playing music through my JBL Creature II Speakers that the left speaker was hardly making any sound. I made sure the connectors were properly plugged in, as each speaker wire has a unique pattern on the connector that corresponds to its input in the subwoofer. My left one has a triangle pattern, while the right speaker has a square. Just to reiterate – the speaker does function, the green light is on, I hear faint music coming out, but it’s just not as loud as the other one.
Causes: Most likely caused by dropping the speaker. However, country music is also known to damage audio equipment – therefore it’s best to only play country music with acoustic instruments out in the country and away from society.
If you weren’t too good at putting the correct shape patterns into correct corresponding holes as a child you may be able to easily fix your speaker by simply making sure they are plugged in correctly and pushed all the way in (pushing in while turning the connector will ensure it falls into place). Just sayin’.
THE REAL FIX (Approx. 5min if that)
So, how to really fix this thing… you’ll need a small phillips (crosshead) screwdriver and some superglue. Unless your speaker is just completely blown out or damaged, what has happened is that the magnet has dislodged itself from where it is supposed to be which it now preventing the speaker from functioning correctly. Without getting into the complexities of how a speaker works, you need to set the magnet back into place.
So… turn the satellite speaker that is no longer functioning correctly upside down so that you see the 4 screws. Remove them and then remove the base of the speaker.
You should see remnants of the glue from where it should be. Now push the magnet all the way to the rear of the assembly so it looks like the picture above. To help prevent it from happening again you may want to superglue it. After you’re all done just reassemble it and start blasting some Skrillex.

Why does the underside of your satellite speaker look so different from mine? I unscrewed the bottom, but could not get it to separate from the top! Still stuck with a dysfunctional right satellite. Suggestions welcome!
I’m not sure why it would look different, unless it’s the original JBL creature speaker. If you have removed all 4 screws just pry harder I supposed.
Hello Ray I read your how to fix JBL speakers, I have a set where the volume is just extremely low, all the plugs are in correctly and there is no master volume control, is there a way I can get the volume to be higher again

There should be a master volume control on one of the small satellite speakers (I believe the right one)… or are you referring to some other kind of JBL speakers and not specifically to the Creature II model?

the satellite might be the one with the volume controls, that’s why it looks different, but the speaker part should be the same

Hey, I pushed the magnet back but the volume is louder than it was but still significantly lower than the right. Any suggestions?
Check that the cables are pushed all the way in (obvious, and I’m sure you probably have done this but just making sure). Other than that, Hmmmm… I’m not sure what the source is. Plug the speakers into different devices and see if you get the same results. Maybe if you’re using a device that has settings for balance check to make sure it’s centered? That’s all I can think of.
There is a cone that attaches to the metal cylinder that is the speaker coil. If this comes off the paper, then you have no lower midrange. Do the repair as stated above. Then take a paintbrus and carefully paint some glue to connect the paper to the cylinder once more. Too much glue will stiffen the paper and make the sound bad, but it has to be enough to bridge any gap. Maybe model airplane glue?

I noticed that in order to access the magnet properly you need to unscrew the single screw found inside that removes the bracket holding the speaker in place. Then its simple to re-adjust the magnet. Worked perfectly. My speakers are like brand new! Thanks for this post!

I have a similar problem with my JBL creature II sound system,but not in the speakers,the problem is in the subwoofer… I moved to another house,and when I installed the soundsystem, the subwoofer wasn’t working and since then it didn’t work anymore…can someone tell me a solution for this please? I’m in a hurry,’cause I love this sound system and I want to avoid buying another one!
They sell the subwoofer only on ebay all the time for as low as $10. Just buy one and get it over with.
Same problem with the left speaker. Took it apart and fixed it in 2 minutes. Hardest part was digging through my tool drawer to find the phillips screwdriver. Thanks so much! You’re awesome!!!
The black paper on my left speaker has started to disintegrate. The speaker rattles and sounds bad. Anyone have any idea where repair parts for the speakers can be bought. I have googled and emailed JBL without success.
I’m not sure if replacement parts are even available for these anymore. Best bet is probably eBay. You may even be able to just buy a “damaged” speaker from eBay that just needs this fix for it to function properly. Good luck.

Thanks for extensive explanation in fixing the creatures satellites but asides from the problem you mention, of a loose driver from the back….Mine has a disintegrating surround situation…..which will develop after at least 7 years of usage or not. I spent considerable amount of time studying what driver would be compatible and I found a replacement driver that is much much better than the $4 40mm drivers sold in Ebay. I have decided to get the AuraSound Cougar NSW1-205-8A 1″ Extended Range Driver 8 Ohm. It is not necessarily affordable considering that the Creatures in themselves cost about $99 originally BUT, if people love its sound that much, it is a must. I got myself a pair and went on to replacing them. Interesting enough there needs to be some tweaks to make them work with the casing, circuit and the housing….
For the cabling…the creature drivers use easy climp on slide in connectors BUT the + connect or the one with the red cable is too small for this driver, meaning that you need to go to RadioShack and get yourself a bag of appropriate easy climp on connectors, about $3-Don’t forget to save the receipt in case that you get the wrong size. I got two bags, use one and returned the other one.
Use longnose pliers to loosen the clamped on connector from the Creature…be patient. Remove the connector, strip more of the cable if you need, and then add the new connector. Make sure that both of the cable slide connectors are sufficiently snug or loose to fit the Aurasound drivers. You will need to tweek this.
Then, you will simply center mount the driver and add the black wedgie plastic mount with the large screw against the driver and screw it in. There will be no need to put anything between the plastic wedge and the driver. Mount everything and the left will be done.
The RIGHT side, with the touch sensitive + or – sensors….do the same as above BUT….I found that when mounting the plastic wedge and the driver…..there was at least about a 5 mm gap between the plastic and the driver. I cut a piece of 6 o 7 mm foam and wedge it making the contact between the wedge and the driver TIGHT.
Then I put everything back.
After this, the Creatures sounded better than ever….if not too wise after having spent $30 worth of materials on a 7-8 old set of PC satellite combo.
I followed Paul’s advice and purchased the 2 x AuraSound Cougar since the foam on mine have also rotted and JBL refused to sell me the drivers. I spent about $28 to get the speakers. The AuraSound speakers seem heavier and sounds stronger than the original. Like Paul said, the + terminal was bigger than the negative so it wasn’t immediately plug and play. I didn’t wanted to have to buy more parts so I flattened out the + clamp and then reformed it around the terminal. To fill in the gap, I also used some foam. The foam was the kind that one would stick on the table edge so my kids would not get hurt when bumping into them…it was kind of random part but it turned out to fit just perfect.

Well!! I’ll be damned!! That was it!! A friend had tripped on the cord knocking the right speaker to the floor, it worked a day or so before it went out. I suppose it gradually vibrated out of position after that. I was searching for replacement speakers and found this. Wow, thanks!!

Glad it worked out for you. I have mine for quite a few years myself and this is the only fix I’ve had to do to keep them operating. It’s great to see everyone able to save their speakers from the junk yard. Growing up I always tried to fix things because it always seemed like people threw out things that were perfectly good when it just needed a small fix. It’s like if someone were to throw out a car just because it ran out of gas.
Dang. My problem (with the same speaker) is that the speaker is just fine; it’s the connection to the sub that is giving me problems.
I just want to say I have had my Crt II’s for over 5 years now and you’ve saved them!!!! even JBL were of no use i found this and…….. boom rocking again.

Great advice, thanks for that. One of my speakers seems broken due to a little finger getting in and breaking the soft material around the centre. The rubbery material is broken all around now. Any chance you might know how to get a replacement cone/magnet assembly? Or two second hand complete speakers?

thanks for the this, now what if the insider rubber is almost damaged, 1 of the speakers is very weak sound, only 20% of the power, unless I push the silver circle a bit hard then i will get the sound back to normal. any comment ?

Hi Ray, I posted my problem some time back and I dont see a feed back doe it mean there is no solution to it or you might have passed it by mistake. My creature II satellite speakers work fine but and I noticed that their surround foams are all broken, where can I get a replacement for them.

i think i’m being a bit thick, i’ve opened at but cant find a loose magnet, how big is the magnet? maybe its still attatched and they are just completely broken. the green bit on is complex with a small black rectangle atatched to it…could that be the magnet? help!! thanks
In the picture there is a big red arrow pointing to where the magnet should be. If you can’t see it like it is in the picture, it’s probably because it is out of place so far forward. So you’ll have to find a way to push it back into place so it looks like how it is above.

However, my situation is a bit different, my both satellite speakers are missing and I managed to get a couple of drivers from my old Edifier r201, but the issue is though i have drivers and speaker boxes the PCBoards inside the JBL satellites are a must, which the Edifier doesn’t use/have.
I am trying to get it from JBL service centre, though i have less hope.
Any proud owner of Creature 2 please help me.
If ever possible could you please provide some info about the wirings and PCBs which I need to know to make it working.
I would like to know:
1. The left and right PCB pictures if possible, top and bottom of both.
2. or atleast the ratings of capacitor(s) and other components (if any) on the Left satellite( so that I can make my own if JBL asks for huge money)
3. how and to which terminals the cables from sub are connected in the satellites PCB.
4. I am going to use custom 3.5mm cables to connect between the sub and the satellites, so please provide the correct pinouts and where each rings of the 3.5mm jack are connected, on both L and R sats.

The satellites are self powered speakers. They draw from the power supply and have their own built in amplifiers. There are no schematics online that I could find. Just put a small amp in between the plugs on the bass module and the speakers you will use and viola, issue solved. it will need its own power source.
My “home unit” seems to work (green light on, can hear very faintly the music, and control treble and bass) but the two little speakers ain’t getting the message. Little green lights on the bottom not even lighting up. No power getting thru. Why would that be?

Hi! My problem is the volume buttons do not work. I cannot get the volume to increase. The connections are fine and when I plug in my apple device and turn the volume on the device all the way up I can faintly hear the music but am unable to get the volume buttons to work. Any advice? Woot –I dropped my sweetie pie speaker and was crushed ( well so was it !). Looked on line and new speakers aren’t as cute.
I opened both speakers since I couldn’t see a magnet . I would word the repair as : Unplugged electrical. Remove the inside screw — wiggle the speaker cone to be sure the gold shiny thing is up against the base– so that there is no gap where the red arrow is pointing above. Rescrew the inside piece. And outside screws . Plug into wall and Done. (I didn’t have super glue around),

I tried what you recommended but still no sound. When I put the speaker to my ear, I can some sound coming out, but nothing like how it should be working. My speaker seems to have more happening in terms of wires that the diagram you have provided. If I change the green component which sticks out (capacitor i believe), will this fix it if the speaker has been blown. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks From Kitchener, Ontario Canada where the Creature has come back to life , actually put new foam on them as well and to the few posts looking for foam try Orion Electrical Supplies , i picked up some small tweeter rings trimmed them a bit applied contact cement and had them like new in ten minutes thats including dry time for the cement warning you only get one chance as the two parts instantly are fused together

I have a the model III and the left speaker stopped working, it had problem with the contacts before(needed to shuffle the cable to make it work), but now it stopped completely, apart from a very quiet buzzing sound. I think this solution could be it for me as well. The problem is, I have no idea how to open them up…

For those with Creature III/3 speakers and are having difficulty finding where the screws are for the speakers, they are under the 4 small rubber bases of each speaker. You will have to peel off the bases to reveal the screws.
The insides of the Creature III/3 speakers are slightly different from Creature II as described in the article above. For me, I just disassembled and reassembled everything and from then on it has been working like a charm.
Thanks so much because your fix worked great! Took me longer to find the superglue then it did to fix it. TOO BAD I didn’t find this site before I bid on another identical system on EBay …hopefully someone will outbid me and I will be off the hook!

I have been trying to repair two pairs of Satellite speakers from the original series Creature System. Apart from not being able to find a suitable power source, (= plug pack or lead, etc, has anybody got a source for the original series or at least the specs and the appropriate plug to match?), I certainly do know that three of the four have that rattlely sound. On inspection, I found that the magnets were loose. At least I now know how to fix that problem. Thanks Ray for the heads op on that. However, all four have deteriorated foam surrounds, but no fixes seem to be available for that. I have tried the local (National JBL) agents for help, but it appears to be not really worth having replacement miniature cones/foam surrounds, or for that matter, complete drivers themselves available, the cost would not be worth it. So I am toying with different types of material, and still investigating. I noticed Dwain’s comment above, where he has also faced this problem, and wondered what he actually used to effect a repair. I have thought of very thin open-cell foam, closed-cell foam, shaping the thin sheet type foam as used on food trays (meat trays), thin butyl rubber, or any of the various membrane types and even wondering if, uuhumm, condom rubber would work! Well it could have the right profile, but probable doesn’t need the great long throw that big bass cones need!

Ray – you are a star -I’ve got three sets of these around the house and one satellite stopped working – taken ages getting around to it – opened it, took a look, wiggled a few things (thought it might be loose broken wire, but no!!), then tried the sensible approach and googled it, which bought me here – 5 mins, a bit of superglue and works like new 😀 – so pleased to not having to ditch it, invest in new – will try and bung a little ‘thank you’ your way so you can ‘have one on me’ – verrrrrry much appreciated.

I have same problem. Took speaker apart and magnet is still attached. All connections good. I guess mine is blown ?

Not quite 100% unfortunately..better as far as volume but still scratchy..wondering if that might be because the foam surrounding the (what do you call the center silver dollar that moves in and out to the beat that animators love to exaggerate) do hickey….?

Thank you for the time you have spent on this document. Not only was the magnet out of place but the paper around the cone was broken (aged). I took the foam handle from an ice scraper and cut a real thin slice that fit perfect around the cone. The sound is fantastic again. Thank you so much!

Hi Ray, my satellite speakers make a lot of noise and the diaphragms for both have withered to its just the silver part left. If I superglue the magnet do I need to get new diaphragms for mine? And what’s the best material to use for that?
Will the subwoofer work without the 2 sat speakers?
I love these speakers but the the foam on both satellite speakers has rotted away. Such a pity as the subwoofer is still fine after 8 years of heavy use. Can’t believe they don’t still sell them as they are very popular.

I got a pair of mines from Ebay. Cheaper with shipping included. Read what I wrote in terms of what I had to do in order to get it working….. Thanks for extensive explanation in fixing the creatures satellites but asides from the problem you mention, of a loose driver from the back….Mine has a disintegrating surround situation…..which will develop after at least 7 years of usage or not. I spent considerable amount of time studying what driver would be compatible and I found a replacement driver that is much much better than the $4 40mm drivers sold in Ebay. I have decided to get the AuraSound Cougar NSW1-205-8A 1″ Extended Range Driver 8 Ohm. It is not necessarily affordable considering that the Creatures in themselves cost about $99 originally BUT, if people love its sound that much, it is a must. I got myself a pair and went on to replacing them. Interesting enough there needs to be some tweaks to make them work with the casing, circuit and the housing….
For the cabling…the creature drivers use easy climp on slide in connectors BUT the + connect or the one with the red cable is too small for this driver, meaning that you need to go to RadioShack and get yourself a bag of appropriate easy climp on connectors, about $3-Don’t forget to save the receipt in case that you get the wrong size. I got two bags, use one and returned the other one.
Use longnose pliers to loosen the clamped on connector from the Creature…be patient. Remove the connector, strip more of the cable if you need, and then add the new connector. Make sure that both of the cable slide connectors are sufficiently snug or loose to fit the Aurasound drivers. You will need to tweek this.
Then, you will simply center mount the driver and add the black wedgie plastic mount with the large screw against the driver and screw it in. There will be no need to put anything between the plastic wedge and the driver. Mount everything and the left will be done.
The RIGHT side, with the touch sensitive + or – sensors….do the same as above BUT….I found that when mounting the plastic wedge and the driver…..there was at least about a 5 mm gap between the plastic and the driver. I cut a piece of 6 o 7 mm foam and wedge it making the contact between the wedge and the driver TIGHT.
Then I put everything back.
After this, the Creatures sounded better than ever….if not too wise after having spent $30 worth of materials on a 7-8 old set of PC satellite combo.
My problem is that my satellite speakers have perished surrounds. Everything is working fine, but because the surrounds have perished, the diaphragm smacks into the front of the housing.

Turns out that the speaker degrades over time as well (i.e. the paper part of the speaker just falls apart). But JBL doesn’t sell replacement speakers. It took me a while, but I finally found a speaker that you can use as a replacement, and they only cost $4 a piece. I just replaced mine, they sound good enough for me.
Anyway, this post was really helpful to me when I had the magnet problem, and I thought others might need to replace their speakers eventually, so I thought I would spread the word.
